Getting Ready for School: Looking for Backpacks and School Bags

A school backpack is usually bought for younger elementary school students. Middle and high school students already go to school with backpacks, briefcases, or bags.
The main difference between a backpack and a schoolbag is its sturdier frame, which helps it “keep the back straight.”

According to GOST requirements, the weight of an empty backpack for students in grades 1–4 must not exceed 700 grams; for high school students, no more than 1 kg. The weight of the backpack with everything inside must be no more than 10% of the student’s body weight.

Orthopedists do not recommend buying a backpack to grow into — it should fit the child, not hang below the lower back or sit above the shoulders. Make sure the backpack fits snugly against the back — this way the load will be distributed evenly, and adjust the straps.

Be sure to explain to your child that the backpack should be worn on both shoulders so there is no imbalance in the shoulder muscles and it does not lead to back pain.
